How do you import your Chrome passwords to Bitwarden?

While Google Chrome's default password manager is a basic option, making the switch to Bitwarden offers a significant upgrade. Bitwarden's features, such as cross-platform compatibility, secure password sharing, and two-factor authentication, provide a more robust and safe experience. With these advantages in mind, it's a wise decision to transfer your stored passwords to Bitwarden.

Rest assured, the process of copying your passwords to Bitwarden is straightforward and hassle-free. By following the steps below, you can import your Chrome passwords into Bitwarden in no more than ten minutes, giving you peace of mind and confidence in the transition.

How to export your Google Chrome passwords

To start moving your passwords to Bitwarden, you first need to export your current passwords to a file that you can import into Bitwarden.

The first thing you have to do is:

  • Navigate to Google Password Manager at passwords.google.com

  • Once logged in, click the settings cog in the top right.

  • Then click Export Passwords. You might need to enter your account password again.

  • You'll then get a CSV file to download; this contains all your login information that you'll import into Bitwarden.

  • You'll then be able to download your passwords in a CSV file. Save this file to your computer.

Now that you have a copy of your Google Password Manager login details, you will need to import them to Bitwarden. There are several ways to import your passwords to Bitwarden, but the easiest is to do it through your Bitwarden Vault.

  • Open Google Chrome and go to vault.bitwarden.com

  • Once logged in, on the left-hand side of the navigation, under the Tools dropdown menu, select Import Data.

  • From the File Format menu, choose Chrome CSV.

  • Select the file you just downloaded from Google Password Manager.

Once the import has been completed (which should not take long), you will find all your passwords in your Bitwarden Vault and accessible through the Bitwarden browser extension and the Bitwarden mobile apps.

It's crucial to remember to delete the file you downloaded from your Google Password Manager from your computer so you don't have a file you'll forget about hanging around on your computer containing all your login information for services that hold your personal data.
