How to save time managing your email by using keyboard shortcuts in Gmail.

The number one app knowledge workers use during the day is email. In 2018, the average office worker sent 121 emails a day, and this number is most likely higher now with reduced face to face communications!

You may be surprised to know that moving your mouse around on the screen to click buttons such as Compose, Send and edit text is not the quickest way to manage your emails.

To speed up the process, Gmail offers a host of keyboard shortcuts. For example; tap C to open a new compose window, rather than clicking the Compose button in the top left. Once your email is ready hit Ctrl+Enter on your keyboard, and your email will get sent, no need to move the mouse to click the Send button!

How to turn on keyboard shortcuts:

  • Go to Gmail settings.

  • Scroll down to Keyboard shortcuts.

  • Toggle Keyboard shortcuts to on.

Here are some of our favourite Gmail keyboard shortcuts:

  • When you are looking at your inbox tap C on your keyboard to start composing a new email.

  • Once you have written your email tap Ctrl+Enter on your keyboard at the same time to send your email.

  • When you view your email inbox use the arrow keys to move through the listed conversations, then tap O to open an email.

  • A quick tap of / will allow you to search your inbox.

  • If you need to label an email, open it then tap L and to move tap M.

  • Press Shift+? to see an overlay for all the keyboard shortcuts available for your use.

The above are just a few of the many keyboard shortcuts you can use to help to manage your email quicker.
