Amazing Keyboard Shortcuts for Gmail.

A multicoloured keyboard

Like most people, you probably use your mouse to point and click when using Gmail rather than using the keyboard to select functions. But did you know Gmail is loaded with keyboard commands? There are so many that if you want, you don't need to use a mouse to navigate Gmail. You can pretty much do whatever you want in Gmail with keyboard commands, and once your fingers are typing away on your keyboard, it is quicker to use a keyboard command than to lift your hand to use the mouse to perform a function.

Give it a try!

Before you can use keyboard commands in Gmail, you will first need to use your mouse to check that you have keyboard shortcuts (as they're called) enabled. Using your mouse, navigate to the settings (the settings cog at the top right of Gmail). Once you're in settings, under the General tab, scroll down to "Keyboard shortcuts" and toggle the setting to on, then click Save at the bottom. Gmail will reload, and the keyboard shortcuts will be active.

The keyboard shortcuts we use daily:

  • C: This shortcut opens a new compose window, allowing you to draft an email quickly. It's a time-saver compared to clicking the compose button, especially if you send many emails.

  • R/A: These shortcuts initiate a reply or reply-all to the currently selected email. "R" addresses a response to the sender, while "A" includes everyone on the recipient list.

  • Ctrl + Enter: After composing your email, this shortcut lets you send it without clicking the send button.

  • E: This shortcut archives the selected conversation, removing it from your inbox but keeping it accessible in the "All Mail" label. It's a great way to declutter your inbox.

  • /: This shortcut activates the Gmail search bar. You can then type your query to find specific emails based on sender, recipient, keywords, or other criteria.

While the above list is a handful of our client’s favourite keyboard shortcuts in Gmail, there are many more; tap ? in Gmail to see the full list!
